I honestly did not know that CASPer existed or that I had to take it until pretty deep into the application process. So if you're in the same boat - don't worry - now you know! CASPer is a Situational Judgement Test which basically means it tests you on how you would handle difficult ethical situations.

Again, I think this topic is best done with a Q&A post because there are so many misconceptions about it!

What is CASPer?
It is a 60-90 minute test that includes 12 scenarios. For each scenario you will be given a video or word prompt and 5 minutes to respond.

What schools require CASPer?
There are a list of schools on the CASPer website. You should also check each school's requirements to see if CASPer is listed (if a school says CASPer is recommended you should take that as required). You have to individually select each school in order for them to see your test score - this is super important!

How much does it cost?
The test itself is $12 but it is an additional $12 for each school you send the score to.

Can I take the test whenever I want?
You actually have to register on the CASPer website for a specific test date/time. https://account.takecasper.com/signup

How is CASPer scored and when will I get my score?
The test is scored by CASPer graders but you will never actually see your score. CASPer is ONLY scored on content so DO NOT worry about spelling/grammar (as long as it makes sense). I think it's insane that you don't get to see your score but I guess such is life? I wouldn't worry about it too much.

How should I study for CASPer?
I truly believe that you only need to spend half a day studying for this test. The most important thing is to practice typing out your answers to sample questions! Although five minutes seems like a lot of time for one question, it is definitely not. There is a standard way to answer these types of questions so you should definitely get used to it before taking the test. There are practice questions on the CASPer website as well as other websites online! I really do not recommend spending any money on CASPer test prep.

This google doc gives a pretty good outline of how to respond:

Honestly - as long as you're a compassionate and reasonable human being you will be okay. The hardest part is having enough time to fully answer each question. Practice your typing skills.

What do I need for this test?
You need a computer you are comfortable on - especially one that you are comfortable typing on. This test really requires quick typing so be comfortable with the keyboard you are using. The computer must also be able to play audio because some of the prompts are videos. You also need to be in a quiet, private room. You will be videotaped while taking the test so just be aware of that.

What kind of questions can I expect?
A lot of the questions are typical "ethics" questions. For example: "You see a friend cheating on an important exam. What do you do?"
Other example questions may be:
          - A coworker tells you they are too stressed to perform well at work. He is asking for advice. What do you say to your coworker?
           - You are working on a group project and one student does not participate. You do not know this student well. What do you do in this situation?

You should get the idea. As long as you stay non-judgemental, goal-oriented, and respectful in your answers you will be okay.
For example: For the last question - it is important that you first find out why this person is not participating. You do not want to assume it is because they are lazy. Maybe they are having a hard time at home, maybe they are sick, maybe they are feeling insecure. This isn't an obvious first step but it is very important for CASPer.

Why do schools require CASPer?
It likely has to do with medical schools' desire to use a holistic review to make their admissions decisions. It is similar to the MMI in that it aims to test your compassion, reason, and logic.

Happy Typing
xoxo
